Support Your Local Farmers Market

One of the simple things you can do to help leave a green footprint is to support your local farmers market. This one basic step can help to improve the environment, support the local economy and the local community, and help you to eat healthier and better.

Depending on the growing season in you local area, you may find that your nearest farmers market is opened for business for a large part of the year. Even if you live in one of the larger cities you should be able to find a location where many of the local farmers go to sell their produce.

When you shop at your local farmer’s market you help to keep your dollars in the local community, stimulating the local economy. You help to make lives a little better for the people who are essentially your neighbors. Supporting your local farmers market can help to improve your entire town or city and is a great way to strengthen community ties and improve community relations.

When you shop at your local farmers market you are also helping to reduce the amount of fossil fuels we consume, and therefore also reduce the amount of pollution. Transporting foods over large areas to get it to your nearest supermarket requires a tremendous amount of fuel. Buying from the local farmers reduces that amount of fuel.

Also, produce that is locally grown and sold at the farmers market is usually cheaper than those at the grocery store. This is because local farmers do not have to factor in the larger transportation costs into the price of their produce.

local farmers marketMost farmers market will have a large variety of fruits and vegetables to choose from. You will have to opportunity to try things you may not otherwise find at the supermarket. In that large selection of fruits and vegetables you are sure to find some that has been organically grown.

Apart from the large selection of produce you might also find meat that has not been “mass produced”. You may also find eggs that come from chicken who are NOT kept in small little cages with their only purpose being to make eggs.

If you live in the right area, you may also find locally produced honey.

Since most farmers will bring their produce to the market on the day they are sold, you will also find that the produce at the local farmers market is much fresher and tastier than those sold at the supermarket.

So do a little research and find your local farmers market the next time you are going shopping for fruits and vegetables.
