Thinking about all the ways you can help to change the world and save our planet can be a very overwhelming task. Since it is more difficult to change the behavior and choices of others, start with little things that you can do. Starting with small steps will eventually get you to where you want to go.
With that in mind, here are five things you can plan to do now to have an impact on our planet today and tomorrow…
1. Buy local - One of the easiest things you can do to save energy and benefit the environment at the same time is to buy locally grown produce. Take a trip down to your local farmer’s market and see what types of vegetables and fruits they have to offer. You may also want to look for a local community supported agricultural project. There you can usually buy a share of a local farm and what they make.
2. Grow your own vegetables - Vegetables bought at the grocery store tend
to be very expensive, especially produce such as green peppers and tomatoes. What makes them so expensive is not the cost to grow them, but rather the cost involved in getting them on the grocery shelves. However, many of these types of vegetables are well suited to window box gardening or porch gardening. Try it today and pretty soon you will have your own supply of ripe tomatoes and fresh green peppers.
3. Use your own shopping bag - One of the things that accumulate really quickly from all those shopping trips are the plastic bags. Sure you can reuse them to take you lunch to work and so on, but it would be much better if you would use your own. Many of the grocery stores now sell reusable shopping bags made from recycled and environmentally friendly material. If you prefer, you can even make your own from some pretty fabric, or you can crochet your bags if you know how.
4. Drive less - For many of us, our largest footprint that affects the planet is our driving habits. Start walking anywhere that is practical, or ride you bike. Even a small decrease in the amount of time we spend driving can have a significant positive impact on the environment.
5. Use online bill payment -
So much paper is used and wasted on sending out bills every month. Factor in the return envelopes and the payment checks and that’s a whole lot of paper. We can do better than that. Consider using your bank’s online bill payment service. Most checking accounts now include free bill pay. If for some reason yours doesn’t then there are several reliable third-party bill payment services that charge a reasonable monthly fee. You can also chose to receive most of your bill electronically which can result in even more save paper.
Of course, these are only a small sample of the things you can do today to have a positive impact on our planet. But as I said, it gives you are starting point. You don’t have to spend too much time thinking about what you can do, but start here and start today.
